Stone station sits on a spur of the West Coast Main Line between Colwich Junction and Manchester Piccadilly, with London Northwestern Railway running an hourly semi-fast service in each direction towards Crewe and Stafford, calling at Stoke-on-Trent and Kidsgrove along the way. Direct services towards Birmingham and Wolverhampton were cut back to start at Stafford instead, so anyone heading that way now needs to change rather than travel straight through.
