NEC Birmingham Taxi: Drop-Off Points, Event Days & Pre-Booked Pickups

taxi to NEC Birmingham

If you’re taking a taxi to NEC Birmingham in a pre-booked private hire car, you’ll be dropped at one of two places. These are the Piazza drop-off and pick-up area or the Atrium entrance. Your collection usually happens in the same areas. On busy event days, the difference between a smooth trip and a long wait comes down to timing and a clearly agreed meeting point.

This guide explains where taxis can stop and how exhibitions and concerts affect journey times. It also covers how to arrange a pickup that actually finds you when thousands of other visitors are leaving at the same moment.

Where taxis drop off and collect at the NEC

The NEC is a private site, and not every vehicle uses the same stopping points. Which area you use depends on the type of taxi.

For most pre-booked journeys, the Piazza area is the most practical meeting point. It’s clearly defined, and drivers know how to reach it.

Which NEC entrance should you use?

The Piazza

The Piazza is the NEC’s main entrance area, on the side closest to Birmingham International station. It has a designated drop-off and pick-up area for private hire, which makes it the default choice for most taxi bookings.

The Atrium

The Atrium is the second main entrance, and private hire cars can drop off there too. It may suit you better if your hall is closer to that side of the site.

Check your event before you travel

The NEC has many halls, and a big show can spread across several of them. Before you book, check your event page or the NEC site plan to see which entrance is nearest your hall. Give that entrance to your driver rather than just “the NEC”.

The site postcode, B40 1NT, only gets you onto the campus. Drivers then follow internal signage, so naming the right entrance matters more than the postcode.

Taking a taxi to bp pulse LIVE

bp pulse LIVE, the arena on the NEC campus, hosts concerts, comedy and sporting events. For shows there, non-partner taxis follow on-site signs to the designated drop-off and pick-up areas.

Concert nights are busier than most exhibition days, because everyone leaves at once. Pick-up areas around the campus can move on busy nights depending on traffic flow. If a sign or traffic marshal sends your driver somewhere different, let your driver know by phone before you walk off to find them.

How event days change a taxi journey to the NEC

Traffic around M42 Junction 6 and the A45

The NEC sits beside Junction 6 of the M42 and the A45. These routes also serve Birmingham Airport, so traffic builds quickly when a large show opens. Major exhibitions and arena events add thousands of cars to routes that are already busy.

As a result, a journey that takes 25 minutes on a quiet weekday can take much longer on the first morning of a big show. We don’t quote a fixed journey time for event days, because traffic depends on the event, the time and any roadworks. Instead, your driver plans the pickup time around the event itself.

Getting the arrival time right

For exhibitions, aim to arrive shortly before doors open rather than exactly at opening time. That’s when the approach roads are busiest. For concerts, arriving well before the published doors time means you can clear security and find your seat without rushing.

Check the NEC’s travel updates page on the morning of your visit. It lists any road closures or disruption affecting the site.

The rush when events finish

Leaving is usually harder than arriving. When a concert ends or an exhibition closes, taxis, cars and shuttle buses all converge on the same roads. If you can wait 20 to 30 minutes after the finish, for example over a drink or while browsing a last stand, both the traffic and the pick-up queue ease considerably.

How to arrange a pre-booked pickup from the NEC

A pre-booked pickup avoids the queue at the rank, but only if you and your driver agree the details in advance. These steps help.

  1. Name the pick-up area. Choose the Piazza or Atrium pick-up area and confirm it when you book.
  2. Give a realistic time. Base it on when your event actually finishes, not when you hope to leave.
  3. Share a mobile number. Your driver can then call or text when they arrive.
  4. Say which exit you’ll use. In a large hall complex, “Piazza side” is far more useful than “outside”.
  5. Tell us if plans change. If a show overruns or you decide to stay longer, contact us as early as possible so we can adjust the pickup.

If you’d like a return journey arranged before the day, NET Airport Transfers can book both legs together with a fixed price agreed upfront. You can get a quote online in a couple of minutes.

Taking a taxi to the NEC from nearby locations

From Birmingham Airport

The airport is the NEC’s direct neighbour. On foot, the free Air-Rail Link takes you from Terminal 1 to Birmingham International station, which is linked to the NEC by a covered walkway. For a traveller with a small bag, that’s hard to beat.

A taxi makes more sense if you’re carrying exhibition materials or have heavy luggage, or if you’re heading to a hotel first. For arrivals, our Birmingham Airport transfers include flight monitoring. Your driver waits inside the terminal with a name board, so a delayed flight doesn’t leave you stranded.

From Birmingham city centre and New Street

Trains from New Street to Birmingham International take roughly 10 to 15 minutes. From there, the station links directly to the NEC by a covered walkway. For solo visitors travelling light, the train is often the quickest option. Our taxi vs public transport comparison looks at that trade-off in more detail.

A taxi is the better choice from addresses away from a station, for groups, or when you’re carrying anything bulky. Our Birmingham taxi service covers pickups from homes, offices and hotels across the city.

From hotels in Solihull, Coleshill and further afield

Many visitors stay outside the city during big shows, because rooms near the NEC fill quickly. We cover pickups from nearby towns, including a taxi service in Solihull and a taxi service in Coleshill, as well as longer trips from further across the Midlands. Our coverage area page lists the towns we serve.

The NEC has thousands of parking spaces, and it runs free shuttle buses from the car parks on exhibition open days. Pre-paying online saves £5 on the standard day rate. That said, driving means dealing with the car park queue, the shuttle and the drive home after a long day on your feet.

Group, exhibitor and accessibility bookings

Groups of up to seven

If several of you are going to the same show, one larger vehicle is usually simpler than two cars. Our Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven passengers, which keeps everyone together and cuts down on meeting-point confusion at the end of the day.

Exhibitors and business visitors

Exhibitors often travel with display stands, samples or laptops, and many need early drop-offs before the doors open to the public. Tell us about any extra luggage when you book. That way, we can send a vehicle with enough space.

Companies sending staff to trade shows regularly can use our corporate travel service, with monthly invoicing instead of paying trip by trip. International visitors flying into London can also book a long-distance transfer, for example through our Heathrow Airport transfers.

Blue Badge holders

The NEC allows taxis carrying Blue Badge holders to drop off at the main entrances. For a pickup at the main entrance, tell your taxi firm about the Blue Badge in advance, and bring the badge with you even when you’re arriving by taxi.

What to tell us when you book

Getting these details right before the day avoids most event-day problems:

  • The event name and which hall or entrance you need
  • Your pickup address and preferred arrival time
  • Number of passengers and how much luggage or kit you’re bringing
  • Any child seats or accessibility requirements
  • Your preferred NEC pick-up area and a realistic collection time
  • A mobile number that will be switched on during the event

If the event finishes late, our guide to late-night and early-morning taxis in Birmingham explains what to expect when public transport winds down.

Book your taxi to the NEC

NET Airport Transfers runs pre-booked taxis to and from the NEC for exhibitions, concerts, conferences and airport connections. Your price is fixed when you book, your driver knows which entrance you need, and your pickup is arranged before you arrive. Book your NEC taxi online or contact us to arrange a return journey or group booking.
