Chester Zoo from Birmingham is roughly 77 miles by road, and the drive usually takes about an hour and a half in normal traffic. By train, the journey takes around two hours to Chester station, then a short bus or taxi ride to the zoo. For families and groups, a pre-booked taxi is the simplest option, because it avoids the change at Chester and the wait for a bus.
This guide compares a private taxi with the train and bus, and explains where drivers can drop off. It also covers winter opening times, the Lanterns & Light evenings, and what to plan for with children, buggies and groups.

Private taxi from Birmingham to Chester Zoo
The route
Most journeys head north on the M6, then continue towards Chester. Visitor guides list leaving the M56 at Junction 14 and following the brown zoo signs along the A41. Your driver checks live traffic before you leave and on the way, and chooses the best route. For a satnav, use the zoo’s official postcode, CH2 1EU.
Journey time
In normal traffic, the drive takes about an hour and a half. However, the M6 can be slow on Friday afternoons and on school holiday weekends. Allow extra time if you need to arrive for a morning start.
Fixed fares
You agree your fare when you book, so roadworks and diversions don’t change what you pay. Our guide to fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that matters on a long journey.
Where the taxi drops off
The zoo’s access guide says it has no designated drop-off point. Your driver will take you to the entrance area by the main car park, and you walk from there. Agree in advance where your driver will wait or return, and share the plan with your group.
Planning your pick-up
Chester Zoo is big, and your group may spread out during the day. Pick a clear meeting point, such as the main entrance, and agree a pick-up time. Message your driver if your plans change, and the pick-up can move with you.

Train and bus from Birmingham to Chester Zoo
The train to Chester
Transport for Wales runs trains from Birmingham New Street to Chester. Its website describes around 90 minutes with one change, or just under two hours on a direct train. It lists first trains at around 5.15am and last trains at around 10pm. If you need a lift to the station, our guide to a taxi from Birmingham New Street covers pick-ups.
From Chester to the zoo
The zoo is a few miles from Chester and Bache stations. Guides list the X1 bus from Chester station (stop S6) or Chester bus interchange (Stand K), taking about 20 minutes. One local listing says it runs every 15 minutes on weekday and Saturday daytimes. A taxi from Chester station takes about 10 minutes. Bus times change, so check the current timetable before you travel.
Bache station
According to the zoo’s access guide, Bache is the nearest step-free train station. Both stations are a few miles from the zoo, so you’ll still need a bus or taxi to finish the journey.
The late-day problem
In winter, the zoo closes early, so you’ll often head back at around 4pm. If you stay for an evening event, the return is later. Check the last train from Chester before you book, and have a back-up plan if a bus or train is delayed. Our taxi vs public transport guide explains the trade-offs on longer journeys.
The Birmingham New Street closure
No trains will run to, from or through Birmingham New Street from 24 to 28 December 2026. The zoo opens again on 27 December, so anyone planning a post-Christmas trip by train should read Network Rail’s announcement first.
Chester Zoo opening times for autumn and winter 2026
Daytime hours
The zoo’s website lists these opening times for the rest of 2026:
| Dates | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| 7 September to 1 November | 10am to 4.30pm |
| 2 November to 23 December | 10am to 4pm (3.30pm on Lanterns & Light dates) |
| 24 December | 10am to 3pm |
| 25 and 26 December | Closed |
| 27 to 31 December | 10am to 3.30pm |
Last admission is one hour before closing. Check the day’s hours before you go, as they can change for events and weather.
Events during your visit
The zoo’s events page lists a family-friendly Top Trumps trail for Halloween, from Saturday 17 October to Sunday 1 November. It also lists an event called Our Story with David Attenborough, from Saturday 17 October to Sunday 31 January. Check the zoo’s website for the latest event details before you choose a date.
What this means for your timing
With a 4pm close, a winter day at the zoo is short. Aim to arrive close to opening at 10am, so you have time for the outdoor paths and the indoor habitats. A taxi that leaves Birmingham at around 8am should get you there for the start, depending on traffic.
Staying warm indoors
Winter is quieter, and many habitats are indoors. The zoo describes Monsoon Forest as the UK’s largest indoor rainforest, with orangutans and free-flying birds. Tropical Realm is another warm option, so plan your route to alternate between outdoor and indoor stops.
Lanterns & Light evenings at Chester Zoo
Dates and times
Lanterns & Light runs from Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Timed entry slots run from 4.30pm to 8pm, and the zoo says tickets start from £12, depending on the day. The most popular slots sell out quickly, so book early.
Adult-only evenings
On 19 November and 8 December, the zoo is offering adult-only evenings for guests aged 18 and over. Families should avoid those dates. The zoo also offers quieter sessions on selected dates, which suit guests who prefer reduced capacity.
Getting home afterwards
The event finishes after dark, so your return journey is later than a day visit. A pre-booked taxi avoids waiting for a late bus, and it can collect you at an agreed time. Tell us when you book that your finish time depends on your entry slot. Our guide to late-night taxis in Birmingham explains what to expect after dark.
Combining a day visit with the evening
If you want both, you may need a separate daytime ticket as well as a Lanterns & Light ticket. The daytime zoo closes at 3.30pm on event dates, so check the zoo’s rules before planning a long day.
Taxi or train and bus: which suits you?
| Consider | Pre-booked taxi | Train and bus |
|---|---|---|
| Time | About 1.5 hours door to door | Around 2 hours, plus the bus or taxi |
| Changes | None | At least the transfer at Chester |
| Best for | Families, groups and buggies | Solo visitors and couples |
| Watch out for | Needs booking in advance | Bus times and the last train home |
For a group of four or more, a single taxi often compares well with several return train tickets plus bus fares. Splitting one fixed fare also keeps the budget simple. For one or two people, the train may work out cheaper.
Driving yourself to Chester Zoo
Parking at the zoo is free, according to the zoo’s website, and the zoo is close to the M56. That makes driving straightforward for those who want it. However, whoever drives faces around an hour and a half each way, which can be tiring after a day outdoors. A taxi lets everyone relax on the way home.
Families and groups
Groups of up to seven
For families and groups of friends, the Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven passengers, so everyone travels together both ways. Tell us how many people you’re bringing and if you have a pushchair.
Smaller groups
If there are only two or three of you, the Mercedes E-Class is comfortable on the motorway. For a birthday or a special occasion, the Mercedes S-Class offers extra space.
Child seats and young children
If you need child seats, ask us when you book and tell us the children’s ages. A long drive and a day outdoors can tire young children, so build in a rest stop or a quiet moment on the way home.
Larger parties and school groups
For Lanterns & Light, the zoo asks groups of 15 or more to contact it directly. As for transport, our corporate travel service can help with business and organised group bookings.
Accessibility at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo’s access guide says Blue Badge parking is available, and parking is free for all users. The nearest designated bay is 26 metres from the ticket office.
From the bays, the route includes uneven surfaces but has step-free access. Visitor guides say the zoo also offers hire buggies, wheelchairs and mobility scooters, which you should book in advance through its accessibility page.
Tell us about any wheelchair or mobility aid when you book, so we can confirm it fits and plan the closest practical drop-off.
A sample plan for a winter day
This example shows how the timings can fit together on a day when the zoo closes at 4pm. Adjust it for your own date and group.
- Leave Birmingham at around 8am, which allows for a stop and some traffic.
- Arrive at the zoo around 9.30am, so you’re at the entrance for 10am.
- Spend the morning outdoors, while the light is best.
- Move to indoor habitats around midday, and stop for lunch.
- Agree a pick-up time shortly before closing, for example 3.45pm on a 4pm close.
- Meet your driver at the agreed point and head home.
Tips for a Chester Zoo day
Before you go
- Book your zoo tickets before you travel, and check the day’s hours.
- Wear waterproofs and warm layers, as much of the visit is outdoors.
- Bring a power bank, so you can contact your driver later.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case anyone gets separated.
During the day
Arrive near opening time, eat a little earlier than the main lunch rush, and keep an eye on the closing time. In winter the light fades early, and the zoo closes before the afternoon is over.
