Christmas at Blenheim Palace from Birmingham is a drive of roughly 60 to 65 miles, depending on where in the city you start. Blenheim Palace puts it at about an hour and a half by car. The Illuminated Trail runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and entry is timed. Most tickets carry a set slot, and Anytime tickets are the exception. Your taxi should therefore work back from your trail slot, not from opening time.
A pre-booked taxi drops you at the event drop-off point, leaves you free to enjoy the market, and collects you when you finish. This guide explains when to leave, where your driver can stop, what to book first and how to plan the journey home.

Is a Taxi the Best Way to Get There From Birmingham?
For most Birmingham visitors, the choice is between a taxi, driving and the train and bus. Blenheim encourages public transport where possible. The right option depends on your group and your slot.
| Pre-booked taxi | Driving | Train and bus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parking | Not needed | Must be pre-booked | Not needed |
| Route | Door to drop-off point | Door to on-site car park | Train to Oxford, then the S3 bus |
| Last stretch | Taxi stops at the crossroads | Walk from the car park | Bus stops outside the main entrance, then a 10-minute walk through the park |
| Late finish | Collection agreed in advance | You drive home in the dark | Check last services before booking a late slot |
| Mulled wine | No designated driver needed | Someone stays sober | No designated driver needed |
When Driving Makes Sense
Driving suits visitors who want to keep their own car or travel from the Oxfordshire side. Blenheim says parking is limited and must be bought in advance. Pre-booked parking costs £10 per car, and on-the-day spaces cost £12 if any remain. Parking elsewhere in Woodstock may lead to a fine.
When the Train and Bus Work
Public transport works well for daytime Palace visits and early trail slots. The usual route is a train from Birmingham New Street to Oxford, then the S3 bus, which stops outside the main entrance. For a slot at 7pm or later, check the last services in both directions first. The journey involves a change and a walk through the park.
How to Plan Your Taxi Around Your Time Slot
Blenheim runs the trail as a timed-entry event. It advises arriving 15 minutes before your slot, and late arrivals cannot get a refund. Work back from your slot in four steps:
- Note the time on your trail ticket.
- Subtract 15 minutes. That is when you want to be on site.
- Subtract the journey time. Use 1.5 hours as your base.
- Add a cushion. We suggest 20 to 30 minutes, because busy dates bring queues at the gate.
Example Timings
The table below uses a two-hour allowance each way, which is the 90-minute drive plus a buffer. It also assumes the trail takes about 90 minutes. Treat the times as a guide.
| Trail slot | Be on site | Leave Birmingham | Trail ends about | Home about |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:30pm | 4:15pm | 2:15pm | 6:00pm | 8:00pm |
| 6:00pm | 5:45pm | 3:45pm | 7:30pm | 9:30pm |
| 7:30pm | 7:15pm | 5:15pm | 9:00pm | 11:00pm |
| 9:00pm (some dates) | 8:45pm | 6:45pm | 10:30pm | 12:30am |
Which Slot Suits Your Group
Early slots suit families with young children and leave you the evening at home. Mid-evening slots give you time to eat first at the food chalets or the Pantry Café. Late slots feel darkest and most atmospheric, but they mean a late return.
Blenheim says early evening and weekend slots sell fastest. You may find more choice on weekdays and later in the evening. Prices also vary between peak, standard and off-peak slots, so check the time grid when you book.
Pickup Areas Around Birmingham
We collect from across Birmingham and the surrounding area, including Sutton Coldfield and Solihull. You can see every location on our coverage area page. A pickup on the far side of the city adds time, so give us your exact address and slot when you book.
Have your tickets sorted? Book your taxi online with your pickup address, slot time and group size. The fixed price is agreed when you book, which helps if you are comparing a fixed-price taxi with a metered one for a longer trip.
Where Your Taxi Can Drop Off and Collect You
Blenheim’s Christmas FAQ gives specific drop-off instructions. Share them with your driver before you travel, because arrangements can change from one season to the next.
Dropping Off
Taxis must enter through the main public gate on Woodstock Road and tell the member of staff in the kiosk. Staff then direct the vehicle to a crossroads, which is as close as vehicles can get during the event. The driver leaves by the usual exit route.
The FAQ does not say whether a drop-off carries a charge. Parking rules apply to visitors who park on site, so check Blenheim’s latest guidance if you are unsure.
Collecting You Afterwards
For pick-ups, Blenheim advises confirming that passengers are ready and waiting at the crossroads. You cannot leave the trail and re-enter, so set your collection time once you finish. Message your driver as you leave the trail, and allow a few minutes to walk out and for any exit queue.
What to Book Before You Book the Taxi
Christmas at Blenheim Palace is a separately ticketed event with limited capacity. Buy tickets first, then build the taxi around your slot.
Trail, Palace or Combined Ticket
You can buy a trail ticket, a Palace ticket for Cinderella Inside the Palace, or a combined ticket for both. At the ticket launch, off-peak trail prices started at £25 for adults and £19 for children aged 3 to 16. Infants cost £1, and a family ticket for two adults and two children cost £84. Combined off-peak tickets started at £67 for adults. Peak slots cost more, and listed prices vary between sources, so confirm the current price on Blenheim’s booking page. Every ticket also carries a £1 booking fee.
Groups of 15 or more adults can ask Blenheim about group rates directly. These are not available to book online.
Anytime Tickets
An Anytime ticket allows entry at any point between the first session and 10 minutes after the last session of your chosen date. You may still queue on popular dates. For taxi planning, a timed slot gives you more certainty about pickup and return times.
Changes and Refunds
Tickets are non-refundable unless you buy refund protection. You can exchange them through the Ticketek app up to 24 hours before your visit, subject to availability. Blenheim does not refund tickets because of bad weather. If it cancels an event, it decides as early as possible on the day and tells ticket holders by text, app notification and email. Tell us if your slot changes so we can move your pickup.
What to Expect at Christmas at Blenheim Palace
The Illuminated Trail
Blenheim describes the trail as more than a million lights, winding through gardens and grounds past treetops and waterfalls. It is outdoors, uncovered and runs along natural paths with uneven ground. Wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes. Blenheim also suggests bringing a torch for emergencies.
There are toilets at the start and halfway along the route. Father Christmas appears on the trail, and visitors can toast marshmallows at the fire pits. Sales points on the trail accept card payments only.
Cinderella Inside the Palace
The 2026 Palace theme is Cinderella. Each State Room tells a chapter of the story, and the Great Hall has a towering Christmas tree. Blenheim recommends allowing 60 to 90 minutes. The Palace has a ramp and lift for wheelchair users, and the State Rooms are all on one level.
Christmas Market, Great Skate and Extras
The Christmas Market in the Great Court runs from 13 November to 20 December. Entry is free, with no Palace or trail ticket needed, and it closes at 5:30pm on non-trail nights. The Great Skate is a covered ice rink with 30-minute sessions. Arrive 30 minutes before your session. Fairground ride tokens cost £12 for four, and the observation wheel is another option.
There is no storage for market purchases, so you will carry anything you buy for the rest of your visit.
Making a Full Day of Christmas at Blenheim Palace
A combined ticket lets you spend the whole day on site. Visit the Palace in the afternoon, have afternoon tea at the Orangery, then walk the trail after dark. Blenheim asks you to allow about 1.5 hours for tea for two to four guests. Children’s afternoon teas must be booked at least 48 hours ahead alongside an adult booking.
You cannot leave the Palace or trail and then re-enter. You can walk into Woodstock between bookings and return to the site. If you plan a long day, book your outward taxi for early afternoon and fix the return pickup around your trail slot.
Travelling With Children, Dogs or Access Needs
Families and Groups
Pushchairs are welcome in the Palace and on the trail. Tell us if you need child seats when you book. Our fleet includes a Mercedes MPV/SUV listed for seven passengers, which you can see on the Mercedes V-Class page. Larger families can travel together instead of splitting across cars.
Dogs on the Trail
Dogs are allowed on the trail only on selected dates, and never inside the Palace. The 2026 dog-friendly dates are 18, 24 and 25 November, 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16 December, and 29 and 30 December. Dogs must stay on short leads, with a maximum of two per person. Registered assistance dogs are welcome on any date, including inside the Palace. If you plan to bring a dog, tell us when you book.
Accessibility and Quiet Sessions
Blenheim holds Quiet Access sessions for both the trail and the Palace on Tuesday 8 December and Monday 28 December. Disabled ticket holders receive one free carer ticket. Blue Badge parking is available to book in advance, so check the location on the booking page.
The trail covers uneven ground with varying gradients, which can be harder in wet weather. Blenheim hires out wheelchairs on request, subject to availability, but does not hire mobility scooters. Contact us before booking if you want to discuss your requirements.
