Co-op Live Manchester from Birmingham by Taxi: Drop-Off, Pick-Up & Getting Home

Co-op Live from Birmingham

Co-op Live from Birmingham is roughly 85 to 90 miles away, at the Etihad Campus in east Manchester. The drive usually takes one and a half to two hours in normal traffic. For a concert night, a pre-booked taxi works well because it avoids the two biggest problems: finding parking and queuing for trams afterwards. Co-op Live holds around 23,500 people, so the roads and the tram stop are busy when a show ends.

This guide explains how a taxi from Birmingham to Co-op Live works. It covers the route, where drivers drop off and collect, and how to time the journey. We also compare the train and driving, and explain how to get home after a late finish.

How a taxi to Co-op Live from Birmingham works

The route

Most journeys head north on the M6, then join the M60 around Manchester and follow signs for the Etihad Campus. Your driver checks live traffic before you leave and on the way, and chooses the best route on the night.

Journey time

In normal traffic, the drive takes around one and a half to two hours. However, the M6 and the M60 can be slow on weekday evenings. If you’re travelling for a weekday show, allow extra time for the rush hour.

Fixed fares

You agree your fare when you book, so roadworks and diversions don’t change what you pay. Our guide to fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that helps on a long journey.

Drop-off and pick-up at Co-op Live

Where taxis drop off

The venue says you can arrive by private hire taxi and be dropped off close to the entrance. It gives M11 3ER as the postcode for pick-up and drop-off. Venue guidance for events has also described designated drop-off and pick-up points on Edwin Road. Arrangements can change from show to show, so check the venue’s map for your date. On the night, follow the signs and any directions from stewards.

Why the designated points matter

The venue has said a residents’ parking scheme operates around the Etihad Campus. As a result, drivers can’t drop off, park or collect outside the designated areas. Your driver will use the official points, so agree the exact meeting spot before the show.

Agreeing a pick-up point

When 23,500 people leave at once, “outside the arena” is the hardest place to find anyone. Before you go in, agree a specific pick-up point with your driver and share it with your group. Keep your phone charged, and message your driver if you’re running late.

Arriving in good time

Doors usually open well before the main act, and security queues build quickly on sold-out nights. Check your ticket for the doors time, and aim to arrive with time to spare. For the latest arrival advice, see the official Co-op Live getting here page.

Getting home after the show

Why the return journey matters

Most concerts end at night, and thousands of fans head for the tram stop and the roads at the same moment. For anyone going back to the Midlands, that makes the end of the evening the hardest part of the trip.

Timing your pick-up

The first 20 to 30 minutes after a show are the busiest. If you wait in the arena or stop for a drink, the crowds often thin out. Your driver can then collect you from the agreed point once the roads around the campus ease.

The drive back

Late at night, the M60 and M6 are usually quieter, so the drive home is often quicker than the trip up, though roadworks can change that. Many passengers sleep on the way back. Our guide to late-night taxis in Birmingham explains what to expect when travelling after dark.

Taking the train and tram to Co-op Live

The route

Trains run from Birmingham to Manchester Piccadilly, and the fastest journeys take under two hours. From Piccadilly, you can take a Metrolink tram on the Ashton line to the Etihad Campus stop, which sits next to the venue. The venue lists the tram ride from Piccadilly at about 10 minutes, and you can check live services on the Transport for Greater Manchester tram page.

Other stations

Manchester Victoria is further out, and the journey involves changing at Piccadilly. Ashburys station is about a 10-minute walk from the campus, so check its train times too. For most visitors from Birmingham, Piccadilly is the simplest choice.

The late-night problem

Getting home is the difficult part of the train option. After a show, tram queues at the Etihad Campus can be long. You then need to reach Piccadilly in time for one of the last trains to Birmingham. If the show overruns, there’s a real chance of missing it, so check the last train time before you go. Our taxi vs public transport guide explains the trade-offs on longer journeys.

Driving yourself to Co-op Live

Parking

The venue offers limited official parking, and you usually need to book it in advance. Spaces may be released up to four weeks before an event, and prices vary, so check the current details on the official website. There’s no guarantee of a space on the night, and some visitors choose Park & Ride sites along the tram line instead.

The drawbacks

Driving gives you flexibility, but whoever drives faces up to two hours each way. On top of that, leaving the campus after a show can be slow. That’s a long day for one person, particularly after a late finish.

For a group of four or more, one taxi often compares well with several return train tickets bought close to the date. Splitting a single fixed fare also keeps the budget simple.

Football and event clashes on the campus

Manchester City home matches

Co-op Live shares the Etihad Campus with Manchester City’s stadium. When a match and a concert fall on the same day, roads and trams are much busier than usual. Check the football fixture list for your concert date, and allow extra time to arrive.

Road closures

The venue warns that roads around the campus can be closed for a short time after football matches. When you’re being dropped off or collected, follow the signs and your driver’s advice on the day.

Weekday or weekend shows?

Midweek concerts

For a concert on a Monday to Friday, you’ll be driving into Manchester during the evening rush hour. Leave Birmingham earlier than you think you need to. On the plus side, the motorways are usually quiet on the late drive home.

Weekend concerts

Saturday and Sunday shows avoid the commuter traffic, but the M6 can still be busy with leisure traffic. Rail engineering works also tend to happen at weekends, which can affect late trains. A taxi avoids both problems and takes the pressure off if the show finishes later than expected.

Concerts with children

Family shows often finish earlier than evening concerts. Even so, children are usually tired by the end of the night, and a long train journey with changes can be hard work. Some concerts also set age limits for younger fans, so check the event page before you buy tickets. If you need child seats, ask us when you book and tell us the children’s ages.

Making a night of it

Eating before the show

Co-op Live has food and drink inside the venue, but queues build before big shows. Eating in Manchester city centre first can save time, and the tram takes only around 10 minutes from Piccadilly. Tell us when you book if you’d like to stop for a meal, and we’ll plan the drop-off around it.

Staying overnight

Some fans stay in Manchester after a show and travel home the next day. If you’re staying overnight, ask us about a return journey to the Midlands the following day.

Flying in for a concert

Accessibility at Co-op Live

If anyone in your group has limited mobility, contact the venue’s access team before you book tickets, as accessible places and parking are limited. Tell us about any wheelchair or mobility aid when you book, so we can confirm it fits and plan the closest practical drop-off.

Tips for a Co-op Live concert night

Before you go

  • Download your tickets to your phone before you leave, as signal can be weak in big crowds.
  • Check the venue’s bag policy, as large bags may not be allowed in.
  • Bring a power bank, so you can contact your driver after the show.
  • Agree a meeting point with your group in case anyone gets separated.

Security checks

Expect bag searches at the entrance on every event night. Bring only a small bag, and check the event page for any items that aren’t allowed. Arriving early helps you clear the queues before the support act starts. The venue has also listed a bag drop on the Etihad Campus, so check whether it’s available for your show.

During the night

Keep an eye on the time if you’re relying on public transport. With a booked taxi, just message your driver if the show runs late, and the pick-up time can move with you.

Pickups across Birmingham and the Midlands

We collect from homes, hotels and offices across the region. That includes pickups through our Birmingham taxi service, as well as from Solihull, Coventry and Wolverhampton. Our coverage area page lists every town we serve.
