Twickenham from Birmingham by Taxi: Nations Championship 2026 Matchday Guide

Birmingham to Twickenham

Birmingham to Twickenham is roughly 110 miles, and the drive usually takes around two to two and a half hours in normal traffic. England play three Nations Championship pool matches at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham this November: Australia on Sunday 8 November (3.10pm), Japan on Saturday 14 November (4.40pm) and New Zealand on Saturday 21 November (2.10pm). The first-ever Finals Weekend follows from 27 to 29 November.

On match days, the roads around the stadium close for up to two hours either side of the game, and stadium parking has to be booked in advance. Private hire cars use a designated pickup point at Twickenham Stoop, on the other side of the A316. This guide explains how a pre-booked taxi from Birmingham works on a Twickenham match day. It covers when to leave, where you’ll be dropped off and collected, and how to get home without queueing at Twickenham station.

Finals Weekend

Allianz Stadium hosts the first Nations Championship Finals Weekend, with double-headers on Friday 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November. Teams are paired according to where they finish in the two pools, and the Grand Final takes place on Sunday 29 November. England will play one of the six matches, but their opponent and match date depend on the final standings.

Getting from Birmingham to Twickenham by taxi

The route

Most journeys head south on the M42 and M40, join the M25 towards the M4 or M3, then follow the A316 to the stadium. Allianz Stadium sits on the northern side of the A316, near the Whitton Road roundabout. The stadium’s address is Whitton Road, Twickenham, TW2 7BA.

Journey time

In normal traffic, the drive usually takes around two to two and a half hours. On match days, however, the final few miles around Twickenham become heavily congested well before kick-off. Your driver checks live traffic and road closures on the day and plans the route around them.

Fixed fares

Your fare is fixed when you book, so traffic on the M25 or a diversion near the stadium doesn’t change what you pay. Our guide to fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that matters on a long journey.

Match-day road closures at Twickenham

Which roads close

On major match days, the roads around the stadium close to traffic, including Rugby Road, Whitton Road and parts of London Road. Closures usually begin around 90 to 120 minutes before kick-off, depending on crowd numbers. The roads can reopen briefly during the game, then close again for up to two hours after the final whistle.

The event-day parking zone

When the council expects a large crowd, it brings in the Twickenham Event Zone, a temporary controlled parking zone covering the surrounding streets. If you park on these streets without a permit, you risk a fine. That’s one reason many fans choose not to drive.

Stadium parking

Official match-day parking at Allianz Stadium must be pre-booked through the official ticketing site. There’s no option to turn up and pay. Spaces are limited, and the car parks empty slowly after the match because of the road closures.

ULEZ

Twickenham is inside London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, which covers all of Greater London. Vehicles that don’t meet the emissions standards pay a daily charge. The stadium is outside the central Congestion Charge zone.

Where taxis drop off and pick up at Twickenham

Twickenham Stoop

Private hire and rideshare passengers are directed to Twickenham Stoop, the home of Harlequins, for drop-off and pickup. The Stoop sits across the A316 from Allianz Stadium, and its postcode is TW2 7SX. On match days, geo-fencing also limits where rideshare apps can stop around the stadium.

Agreeing your pickup point

Before you leave Birmingham, confirm the pickup point with your driver and share it with everyone in your group. In an 82,000-capacity crowd, “outside the stadium” is the hardest place to find anyone. A specific, agreed spot near the Stoop is much easier.

Taxi ranks

The nearest taxi rank is on London Road, south of the A316. Pre-booked private hire cars, though, don’t wait on taxi ranks for passengers. That’s why your driver meets you at the agreed pickup point instead.

When to leave Birmingham

Work back from kick-off

Start with the kick-off time. Then allow time to walk from the drop-off point, clear the stadium’s security checks and find your seat. Add the two to two and a half hour drive, plus a generous buffer for match-day traffic. Because road closures can begin up to two hours before kick-off, aim to reach the area well before then.

For England v New Zealand, which kicks off at 2.10pm, many groups leave Birmingham in the morning so they arrive with time to spare. For England v Japan at 4.40pm, a late-morning departure leaves time for lunch near the stadium. We’ll suggest a pickup time for your address when you book.

Eating and drinking before the match

Twickenham and Richmond both have plenty of pubs and restaurants, and they fill up early on match days. If you’d like to stop for food before the match, tell us when you book, and we’ll plan the drop-off around it.

Getting home after the match

Twickenham station queues

Twickenham station, about a 10-minute walk from the stadium, gets extremely busy after the final whistle. Fans join managed, one-way queues, and it can take a long time to get on a train. Some fans walk to Richmond station instead, or use the match-day shuttle bus between the stadium and Richmond.

Taking a taxi home

A pre-booked taxi avoids the station queues entirely. You walk to the agreed pickup point near Twickenham Stoop, and your driver takes you straight back to the Midlands. Roads stay closed for up to two hours after the match, so allow time for the traffic around the stadium to clear.

Waiting for the crowds to ease

Many fans stay in a nearby pub after the match, giving the queues and traffic time to ease before heading home. If you’d like to do the same, agree a later pickup time with your driver in advance.

Late returns to the Midlands

A late kick-off, such as England v Japan at 4.40pm, means a late drive home. Our guide to late-night taxis in Birmingham explains what to expect when travelling after dark.

By train

From Birmingham, you can travel to London Euston or Marylebone, then cross London to Waterloo for South Western Railway trains to Twickenham. The final leg from Waterloo takes around half an hour. It works for one or two people, but it involves several changes, and the journey home starts with the station queues. Our taxi vs public transport guide explains the trade-offs on longer journeys.

By car

Driving gives you flexibility, but you’ll need pre-booked parking, and the road closures make leaving the area slow. Whoever drives also faces a long journey home after a full day out.

By pre-booked taxi

A taxi takes your group from your door to a drop-off point near the stadium, then brings you home again. Nobody has to drive, and there’s no parking to book.

Groups, families and hospitality guests

Groups of up to seven

Rugby trips are often group outings. One larger vehicle keeps everyone together and splits the cost. The Mercedes V-Class seats up to seven passengers.

Smaller groups and special occasions

If there are only two or three of you, the Mercedes E-Class is comfortable for the motorway. For hospitality guests or a special occasion, the Mercedes S-Class offers more space.

Corporate hospitality

Businesses taking clients to Twickenham can use our corporate travel service, with journeys invoiced monthly rather than per trip.

Accessibility

The stadium offers accessible parking and drop-off for Blue Badge holders, along with wheelchair and easy-access seating. You need to book these in advance through the stadium’s accessibility team. Tell us about any wheelchair or mobility aid when you book, so we can confirm it fits.
