For a day trip in 2026, the best Christmas markets near Birmingham are Bath, Chatsworth, York and Manchester, along with the city’s own Frankfurt Christmas Market. Birmingham’s market opens first, on 5 November, followed by Manchester on 6 November, Chatsworth on 7 November and York on 12 November. Bath has the shortest season, running from 26 November to 13 December.
Each market is roughly an hour and a half to two and a half hours away by road. That makes them ideal for a day out, but it also means a long drive home in the dark for whoever is behind the wheel. This guide covers the dates, what makes each market worth the trip, and where taxis can drop you off and pick you up. It also explains how to plan the day with a pre-booked taxi, so nobody has to drive.

Christmas market day trips by taxi
Bath Christmas Market
Bath’s market runs from Thursday 26 November to Sunday 13 December 2026, with around 250 traders. Its wooden chalets fill the streets around Bath Abbey, selling local crafts, gifts, clothing and artisan food and drink. It opens at 10am every day and closes at 7pm Monday to Wednesday, 8pm Thursday to Saturday and 6pm on Sundays.
Getting there from Birmingham
Bath is roughly two hours from Birmingham by road, usually via the M5, then towards the M4 and A46. On market weekends, traffic into the city can be very slow, because Bath’s narrow streets weren’t built for the crowds the market draws.
Drop-off and pickup
The market sits in the pedestrianised heart of the city around the Abbey, so taxis can’t drop you beside the chalets. Your driver will use the most practical drop-off point nearby, depending on the traffic and road restrictions on the day. Before you head into the market, agree a specific pickup point for the end of the day.
Making a day of it
Bath on Ice, an outdoor skating rink in Royal Victoria Park, runs from 14 November 2026 to 4 January 2027. It’s a popular extra for families, but it’s some distance from the market, so allow time to walk between the two.
Chatsworth Christmas Market
Chatsworth’s Christmas market runs on the estate in Derbyshire from 7 November to 13 December 2026. It combines market stalls with the setting of Chatsworth House and its grounds, and the house itself is usually decorated for Christmas during the season.
Getting there from Birmingham
Chatsworth is in the Peak District, roughly an hour and a half to two hours from Birmingham. The final stretch uses country roads, which can be slow on busy weekends and tricky in winter weather.
Tickets and timing
Popular events at Chatsworth often need tickets booked in advance, and the house and grounds may have separate tickets. Check the Chatsworth website before you travel to see what you need, and choose an arrival time that fits your booking.
Drop-off and pickup
Chatsworth is a large estate, so agree the pickup location with your driver before you go in. Daylight is short in late autumn and parts of the estate are unlit, so aim to be back at the pickup point in good time.
York Christmas Market
York’s market, known as the St Nicholas Fair, runs from 12 November to 21 December 2026 on Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. It opens from 10.30am to 7pm, Wednesday to Monday, and closes early on its final day. The market is closed every Tuesday, so avoid planning your trip for a Tuesday.
Getting there from Birmingham
At around two and a half hours by road, York is the furthest of the four day trips. That makes for a long day, so an early start and a late-afternoon pickup usually work best.
Drop-off and pickup
Much of York’s historic centre is a pedestrian zone during the day. As a result, taxis drop off and collect at the edge of the footstreets rather than inside them. Choose a pickup point that’s easy to find, such as a main road near the city walls, and share it with your group.
Making a day of it
York’s medieval streets, the Minster and the Shambles are all within walking distance of the market. Allow time to explore, but keep an eye on the clock for your pickup.
Manchester Christmas Markets
Manchester’s markets run from 6 November to 22 December 2026, spread across several sites in the city centre. Some, including Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens, are expected to stay open until 3 January 2027. With markets dotted around the city, it’s easy to spend a full day walking between them.
Getting there from Birmingham
Manchester is around an hour and a half to two hours from Birmingham via the M6. Traffic into the city centre can be heavy on market weekends, especially in December.
Drop-off and pickup
The markets are spread across the city, so agree one central pickup point for the end of the day. That’s much easier than trying to meet beside a particular stall.
Birmingham’s own Frankfurt Christmas Market
If you’d rather stay closer to home, Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from 5 November to 24 December 2026 around Victoria Square and New Street. It’s one of the longest-running Christmas markets in the UK, with a wide choice of German food, drink and gifts.
Getting into the city centre
The market sits inside Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone, and city-centre car parks fill up quickly at weekends. A taxi drops you close to the market, with no need to park. If you’re arriving by train, the market is a short walk from New Street station. Our guide to getting a taxi from Birmingham New Street explains where to meet a pre-booked taxi for the journey home.
Why take a taxi for a Christmas market day trip?
Nobody has to drive
Christmas markets are known for mulled wine and seasonal drinks. With a pre-booked taxi, everyone in your group can enjoy the day, and nobody has to drive home in the dark.
No parking to find
Parking near the most popular markets is limited and expensive at peak times. A taxi drops you close to the market and collects you at an agreed time, so there’s no car park to find.
Fixed fares for long journeys
Your fare is fixed when you book, so traffic and diversions don’t change what you pay. Our guide to fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that matters on longer journeys.

Planning your day trip
Choosing the right day
Weekends are the busiest days at every market, especially in December. If you can visit on a weekday, you’ll find smaller crowds and quieter roads. For York, remember that the market is closed on Tuesdays.
Timing your return
Daylight is short in late November and December. Plan a pickup time that gets you on the road before the evening traffic builds, or once it has eased. Agree the time in advance, and let your driver know if your plans change during the day.
What to bring
- Warm layers, a hat and gloves, as you’ll be outside for most of the day
- Comfortable shoes for walking between stalls and streets
- A bag for your shopping, as many stalls don’t provide them
- Some cash, in case a stall doesn’t take cards
- A charged phone, so you can contact your driver
