Why fly from Liverpool if you live in the Midlands?

Birmingham Airport is the obvious choice for most Midlands travellers, but it doesn’t always have the route, date or fare you need. Liverpool is a popular alternative for some routes, especially with low-cost airlines. For travellers in north Staffordshire, Shropshire or Cheshire, it can also be closer than you’d expect.

Before booking a flight, compare the full cost of each airport, including getting there. For many Midlands addresses, Birmingham Airport transfers or East Midlands Airport transfers mean a shorter drive. Manchester Airport is another option, especially if you live in north Staffordshire.

How long does a transfer to Liverpool Airport take?

From Birmingham and the West Midlands

Most journeys head north on the M6, then continue towards Liverpool on either the M56 or the M62. From Birmingham city centre, expect somewhere around two hours in normal traffic. Leaving from the Black Country or Wolverhampton can cut a little time off, depending on how you join the M6.

From Staffordshire, Shropshire and nearby towns

Starting further north or west shortens the journey. Pickups from Stafford, Stoke, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Telford and Shrewsbury usually take noticeably less time than pickups from Birmingham. We’ll confirm a pickup time for your address when you book.

Allow for M6 traffic and roadworks

The M6 north of Birmingham is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country, particularly on Friday afternoons and at the start of school holidays. Motorway roadworks can add delays at short notice, too. For early flights, we plan pickup times with a margin for traffic, rather than using the best-case journey time.

Planning your pickup time

Start with your flight’s departure time and work backwards. Allow time for check-in and bag drop, then security, then the drive. On top of that, add a buffer for traffic. Your airline’s advice on check-in deadlines is the best starting point.

A very early flight from Liverpool can mean leaving the Midlands in the middle of the night. Our guide to late-night and early-morning taxis explains how these bookings work. Pre-booking also gives you a confirmed driver when public transport isn’t running.

Where taxis drop off and pick up at Liverpool Airport

The Express Drop-off and Pick-up

The Express Drop-off and Pick-up car park sits directly opposite the terminal, and it’s the closest stopping point to check-in. You can’t reserve a space; drivers pay when they leave. From 1 September 2026, the charge for the first 10 minutes rose to £7. The barriers take card payment only.

With NET Airport Transfers, the price you agree when you book is the price you pay. There are no charges added afterwards.

Drop Off 2 is a cheaper alternative, about 400 metres from the terminal, next to the car hire and budget car parks. The walk takes around eight minutes. That’s fine with light luggage, but it can be hard work with several large cases, children or anyone with limited mobility.

No stopping on the approach roads

The roads approaching the terminal are a red route, marked with double red lines. Stopping is not allowed, even briefly, and cameras issue fines automatically. Every drop-off and pickup has to happen in one of the designated areas, never at the kerbside.

The Mersey bridges: tolls on some routes

Some routes from the south cross the River Mersey using the Mersey Gateway Bridge or the Silver Jubilee Bridge, both of which are tolled. There are no toll booths, and drivers pay online afterwards by the published deadline. Other routes, such as the M62 and M57, avoid the bridges altogether.

Your driver picks the route based on traffic on the day. Because your fare is fixed, any toll or detour doesn’t change what you pay. Our comparison of fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that matters on longer journeys.

Airport pickups when you land at Liverpool

Arrivals are where pre-booking pays off most. We monitor your flight rather than relying on the scheduled time, so an early landing or a delay moves your pickup with it. Share your flight number when you book, and keep your phone on after you land.

If you’d like your driver to meet you inside the terminal, ask when you book. Otherwise, we’ll agree a pickup point in the Express Pick-up area. If your bags are slow off the carousel or your flight is badly delayed, message us, and we’ll adjust.

Choosing the right vehicle

  • Up to three passengers: the Mercedes E-Class is comfortable on a two-hour motorway run.
  • Families and groups of up to seven: the Mercedes V-Class keeps everyone together, with space for holiday luggage.
  • Business travellers: the S-Class is available if you want a quieter space to work or rest on the way.

Tell us how many suitcases you’re bringing, as well as how many passengers. For holiday trips, luggage often decides the vehicle more than passenger numbers do. Child seats are available on request. Just mention them when you book.
