Birmingham to London Taxi Travel Guide

Birmingham to London Taxi

A Birmingham to London taxi covers roughly 120 miles. In normal traffic, the drive usually takes two and a half to three and a half hours door to door, depending on where in London you’re going and when you leave. West London is usually quickest via the M40, while the City and east London take longer.

Before you book, it helps to know which London charges could apply. The Congestion Charge is now £18 a day in central London, and the ULEZ covers the whole of Greater London. This guide covers journey times, routes, charges and return trips. It also explains when a taxi makes more sense than the train.

How long does a taxi from Birmingham to London take?

Your London destination matters most

Getting to the edge of London is only part of the journey. The last few miles through the city can add as much time as a long stretch of motorway.

  • West London (such as Ealing, Chiswick and Hammersmith) is usually the quickest to reach. The M40 feeds straight into the A40.
  • Central London (such as the West End, Westminster and Marylebone) adds slow traffic once you leave the A40.
  • North London (such as Barnet and Hampstead) can be reached via the M1, depending on your exact address.
  • The City, Canary Wharf and east London usually take the longest, as the route crosses much of the capital.

When you book, give us your full London address rather than just “London”. Then we can plan the right route and pickup time.

Best and worst times to travel

Leaving Birmingham mid-morning, after the rush hour, usually avoids the worst traffic at both ends. Early starts work well too, provided you reach London before its own morning peak builds.

Friday afternoons and the start of bank holiday weekends are usually the slowest times on the M40 and M1. If you have a fixed appointment, such as a meeting, show or hospital visit, allow a generous buffer.

Roadworks in 2026

Major HS2 motorway works are planned across the West Midlands during 2026. They can affect the M42 and M6, which many journeys use to reach the M40. Check for current roadworks the day before, or let your driver choose the route on the day.

M40 or M1: which route will your driver take?

Most Birmingham to London journeys use one of two routes.

The M40 runs from Junction 3a of the M42 towards Oxford and High Wycombe, then becomes the A40 into west London. It’s usually the most direct route for west and central London.

The M6 and M1 make more sense for north London addresses, and sometimes for journeys starting in north Birmingham or Sutton Coldfield.

Drivers switch between the two depending on traffic, closures and your destination. With a fixed fare, a longer detour to avoid a hold-up doesn’t change what you pay. Our guide to fixed-price and metered taxis explains why that matters on long journeys.

London charges to ask about when you book

Congestion Charge

The Congestion Charge applies to vehicles driving in central London between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and between 12pm and 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays. The daily charge rose from £15 to £18 on 2 January 2026. Electric vehicles also lost their full exemption at the same time, so most cars entering the zone now pay.

If your destination is inside the zone during charging hours, ask whether your quote includes the charge. We’ll confirm how it’s handled when we quote your journey.

ULEZ

The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all of Greater London, 24 hours a day. It’s separate from the Congestion Charge, and it applies to vehicles that don’t meet the emissions standards. Before you book any taxi into London, it’s worth asking whether the vehicle is ULEZ-compliant.

Other possible costs

Charges also apply at the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels in east London, so ask if your route might use them. Some hotels, venues and stations charge for waiting or parking as well. If your driver will be waiting for you in London, mention it when you book.

Taxi or train from Birmingham to London?

The train is usually faster between the two city centres. Avanti West Coast’s fastest services run from New Street to Euston in around 1 hour 20 minutes, and Chiltern Railways runs slower trains from Moor Street and Snow Hill to Marylebone. The taxi wins on door-to-door convenience in other situations.

When a taxi to London makes most sense

Families and groups. Four train tickets can cost more than one shared vehicle, especially when buying on the day. A single booking also keeps everyone and the luggage together.

Business travel with several stops. A driver can take you from your office to a meeting, then on to a second appointment, without you juggling the Tube. Companies with regular London trips can use our corporate travel service, which offers monthly invoicing instead of paying per trip.

Late returns. After a West End show, a concert or a late dinner, the last trains back to Birmingham can come sooner than you’d like. A pre-booked return means you aren’t watching the clock. Our guide to late-night taxis in Birmingham covers what to expect at the Birmingham end.

London airports. If you’re going to London to catch a flight, a direct airport transfer is usually simpler than going via central London. We run Heathrow transfers, Gatwick transfers, London City transfers and Luton transfers, all from Birmingham.

Choosing the right vehicle

  • Up to three passengers: the Mercedes E-Class is comfortable for a two- or three-hour motorway run.
  • Business trips and special occasions: the Mercedes S-Class offers more space and quiet if you want to work or rest on the way.
  • Groups of up to seven: the Mercedes V-Class seats everyone together, with room for luggage.

Tell us how many cases you’re bringing, as well as how many passengers. Luggage often decides the vehicle more than passenger numbers do.

Booking the return from London to Birmingham

Wait-and-return or two separate bookings

For a same-day trip, such as a meeting or an appointment, you can ask about a wait-and-return booking, where the driver waits for you in London. If you’re staying overnight or longer, book the return as a separate journey with its own date and time.

Agree a pickup point your driver can reach

Many London streets have strict stopping restrictions, and some roads are closed to general traffic. Choose a pickup point where a car can stop safely and legally, such as a hotel entrance, a quiet side street or a venue’s designated pickup area. Share it when you book, and keep your phone switched on.
